D2 Tool Steel Oversize Diameter Round Bar

D2 steel is a high carbon, high chromium tool steel. For almost a century it has been a common steel used in making knives and other cutting tools such as choppers and shredders. It has good wear resistance and hardness and adequate toughness for a variety of other uses such as stamping and forming dies (the original purpose, hence the ‘D’ in its designation), punches, rolls and general tool manufacture. D2 is known for its ability to keep a sharp edge even when worked at high temperatures, and it is an easy metal to machine and grind. It retains its shape and size even under high-stress conditions. These are the properties that have made it such a common material for making knives. Other tool steels on the market can have better toughness and corrosion resistance than D2, but these are significantly more expensive.

D2 is an air-hardening steel, which is also an attraction for tool, die and knife making since the metal hardens naturally as it cools after working. However, if the metal is to be worked, it must be annealed by heating to a high and consistent temperature and then cooled as slowly as possible to prevent it hardening in the air before it is ready.

All D2 supplied by Rennie Tool is made in Germany and is supplied already annealed and ready to machine. All our D2 Round Bar is supplied up to 1mm oversize – the bar is roughly finished to oversize, so will machine down to the stated diameter for your final product.
